German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday said that the problems in Afghanistan cannot only be solved militarily, and that it was important to reconcile with all forces in that country. Merkel was speaking at a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after India and Germany held wide-ranging discussions on a number of bilateral, regional and international issues, including the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Both sides agreed that terrorism poses a serious challenge and should not be fought 'selectively'. Dr. Singh said: "Both India and Germany recognize that terrorism is a serious challenge and should be fought on all fronts and not selectively." Merkel said: "India and Germany have the same goal in Afghanistan. Both want the country with security in its hands. Both India and Germany want Afghanistan to take up security issues in its own hands." Merkel announced that Germany will host a crucial conference on Afghanistan in Bonn later this year. This will be a follow up to the conference held in Turkey where India was not invited.
