Prime Minister promises to regularise contract doctors

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani announced on Monday that contractual doctors will soon be made permanent.
While speaking to doctors from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and the paramedic staff, the prime minister said that a committee has been formed that would evaluate the conditions put forward by the doctors.
The committee is expected to present its report within 15 days.
Gilani added that doctors were an important part of society and the government would continue to work for their betterment.Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has formally approved the new service structure of medical practitioners and para-medical staff, a spokesman of Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.
The spokesman said that the doctors and para-medical staff will now work in hospitals according to the new service structure and a notification in this regard will be issued soon.
He said that according to the new service structure, new Grades 1-8 have been allocated to para-medical staff while new Grades 8-13 have been designated for medical practitioners instead of previous grades.
He said now the medical practitioners will work in the hospital at initial Grade-9, which will be equivalent to BPS-17. Moreover, the doctors will now automatically be promoted to the next grade upto new Grade-13, unlike the past practice of spending years in one grade like in BPS-18.
He said that the government has also decided to regularise the services of contractual medical practitioners.
He also said that a three-member committee headed by Federal Secretary Health and comprising representatives of Ministry of Finance and Establishment Division has been constituted to look into the financial implications.
The committee would submit its report within 15 days.
