Last bid to save ruling coalition again

In a bid to calm and keep the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on board, Interior Minister Rehman Malik called on MQM Quaid Altaf Hussain at his London Secretariat on Sunday. The talks between the two continued for more than two hours. MQM Rabita Committee members Mohammed Anwar and Qasim Zia were also present during the meeting. Sources said Altaf Hussain apprised the minister of the MQM's reservations while Malik briefed him on the conspiracy to destabilise Pakistan by creating an urban-rural divide in Sindh. The Muttahida leader said different groups were involved in extortion and target killings in Karachi, resulting in an increase in the crime graph. Malik said the government was taking measures to curb crimes and expressed the hope that the coalition between the MQM and the PPP will remain intact in the larger interest of the country. He once again assured Altaf Hussain that the intentions of the PPP were sincere and all genuine demands of the MQM would be accepted. Malik said the MQM is the most reliable coalition partner of the PPP and has stood by it through thick and thin.

He said he will apprise President Zardari of all the reservations of the MQM, adding both the parties will collectively foil all the conspiracies being hatched to break the coalition. Malik lauded the vision and ideology of Altaf Hussain and his leadership qualities.
