Uzbek authorities say 13 people have been killed in a powerful earthquake that hit the Central Asian nation's heavily populated Ferghana Valley. An magnitude-6.2 temblor centered in neighboring Kyrgyzstan hit early Wednesday some 22 miles (35 kilometers) from the eastern Uzbek city of Ferghana, which has more than 200,000 people. The Uzbek Emergency Services Ministry said in addition to the deaths, 86 people were treated for injuries, with 35 of them hospitalized. Officials said residential buildings in a number Ferghana Province towns have been damaged but did not elaborate.
