A bus plunged off a bridge and burst into flames in the southern India, killing 22 people, after the driver tried to avoid another crash, police said on Wednesday. The bus travelling from Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu state, to the town of Tiruppur veered off the road and fell into a pit on Tuesday night, local police chief K. Manoharan told a foreign news agency by telephone. The driver and one passenger jumped out of the vehicle and survived, Manoharan said, adding the remaining 22 travellers either died in the crash or were burnt to death. "The driver swerved to avoid ramming into two trucks which had collided," he said, adding the accident occurred some 100 kilometres (60 miles) from Chennai.
