Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leaders Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi held a meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani recently, South Punjab News reported on Saturday.
According to sources, earlier the senior PML-Q leaders met with the Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari where in certain matters were discussed as well as seeking the mandate to meet with the army chief.
During the meeting, sources said, Kayani was told that Gilani was upset over the Defence Secretary’s statement presented in the Supreme Court and that he was instead in favour of a consensus. The Chaudhry brothers added that despite Gilani’s disapproval, he did not want a confrontation.
Earlier a top official of the federal government on Thursday disowned a controversial reply filed by the ministry of defence (MoD) submitted to the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
The reply submitted on behalf of the secretary of the ministry of defence created a stir by stating that the army and the ISI was not under its control. The secretary’s reply had also stated that the ministry could not submit any reply on behalf of the army or ISI.
However, the official had told The Express Tribune that they didn’t know on whose instructions the defence secretary was acting – but it wasn’t the federal government.
