The Supreme Court on Monday resumed the hearing of petition filed against the Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) wherein the court was informed that no ECP had been working in the country at the moment.
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is hearing the petition filed by a private TV channel anchor person against incomplete ECP.
The Chief Justice during the hearing on Monday remarked that the government has failed to fulfill its legal obligations during the last one year. He questioned that what would be the legal effects of the decisions made by the incomplete election commission when people were challenging its decisions in courts.
The attorney general admitted in the court that no election commission had been working in the country at the moment. The court ordered the Government to complete the constitution of the Election Commission according to the 18th Amendment.
The petitioner had pointed out that the government has failed to form an election commission after the passage of 18th and the 19th amendments to the constitution.
During the previous hearing, no federal government representative had appeared before the court, and the court had to adjourn the hearing.
