A suicide bomber, who was riding on a motorbike, blew himself up near a police checkpoint on Imbar Inter Change on Islamabad-Peshawar motorway here Wednesday, killing 10 persons instantly and wounding 15 others, DPO Abdullah Jan said.
He told journalists that 10 persons were killed and 15 others injured when the bomber came on a motorbike in a flash and detonated his explosive vest close to Ambar check post near Swabi town where people were coming in large number to attend JUI (F) public meeting that was planned to be addressed by JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman at Swabi. A police cop was also among the dead.
The police have recovered body parts of the suicide bomber and head and legs would be sent for DNA test, he added. The identity of victims could not be immediately ascertained. The death toll may rise further as condition of several victims stated to be critical.
The injured were rushed to DHQ Hospital Swabi while critical were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar.
The bang of explosion was heard in long distance that created terror as bodies were found in pool of bloods while injured were crying for help with mobile ranging.
JUI (F) spokesman Jalil Jan told APP that Maulana Fazlur Rehman was on his way to venue of public meeting, when the bomber exploded himself.
He said Maualan Falur Reman is safe and public meeting has been cancelled due to security reasons. He said the target appeared to be JUI leadership that narrowly escaped. The JUI (F) workers later staged protest demonstration and demanded arrest of the killers.
